Answers to common questions about workplace spirometry and respiratory monitoring in BC.
Spirometry measures how much air a person can move out of their lungs and how fast. In occupational health it establishes a baseline before exposure and tracks lung function over time in workers exposed to dust, fumes, vapours or other respiratory hazards. Each test takes 10-15 minutes and results are reviewed by a physician.
No. There is no section of the BC Occupational Health and Safety Regulation that requires spirometry, for any exposure - BC differs from US requirements here. Where an exposure control plan is in place, OHSR 5.54(2)(f) lists health monitoring as an element “when required”. Spirometry is how most employers meet that. Otherwise it is a voluntary program employers run to catch lung damage early and to hold a baseline.
There is no interval set in BC regulation, so we set one against your exposures. The common pattern is a baseline before a worker starts in an exposed role, then annually while exposure continues. Lower-risk environments often move to every two years. We recommend a schedule based on what your workers are actually breathing.
A single test shows lung function against predicted values for that person's age, height and sex. The value is in the series. A worker whose numbers fall faster than normal ageing would predict gets flagged for follow-up while something can still be done. Spirometry identifies a change worth investigating; it does not diagnose a disease.
Yes. We complete about 30 tests per technician per day depending on site layout and scheduling, and add technicians for larger groups. Most employers book spirometry on the same visit as hearing testing so the crew only comes through once.
