Common questions about on-site respirator fit testing.
Up to one year. Workers need a fit test before first using a tight-fitting respirator, then at least once a year (OHS Regulation section 8.40). Retest sooner after a new model or size, significant weight change or dental work, or if the seal feels wrong.
Qualitative testing covers N95 and half-face respirators. Quantitative testing measures a numeric fit factor and covers full-face respirators and tight-fitting PAPRs; under CSA Z94.4 it is the only option for full-face. It is for larger groups.
About 10 to 15 minutes per person. We can start early or work around staggered crews.
Yes. Workers must be clean-shaven where the mask seals, with no hair, jewellery or glasses under the edge. We send instructions before the visit.
No. We test groups of 5 or more at one site. For one or two people, a clinic or safety supplier with walk-in fit testing will be faster.
