A four-hour practical course at your site that trains your designated safety staff to perform qualitative respirator fit testing on your own workers, following CSA Z94.4 protocols. Every participant completes a hands-on competency assessment before they are signed off.

British Columbia's Occupational Health and Safety Regulation requires tight-fitting respirators to be fit tested in accordance with CSA Z94.4. Most employers outsource every test. If you hire steadily, or you need a worker cleared before a shift rather than at the next scheduled visit, training someone in-house is the faster answer.
The course covers qualitative fit testing using Bitrex or saccharin protocols. It does not cover quantitative fit testing.
Your organisation remains responsible for its respiratory protection program under the Regulation, whoever performs the testing. We train the tester; the program stays yours.

A working course, not a lecture. Participants finish it having performed a complete fit test from start to finish, and leave able to test the next worker on Monday.

Your tester can call us with a question. When you have a large intake, a shutdown, a second site, or cover to arrange while your tester is away, we can come and test.

Here are answers to common questions about our on-site fit tester training.
A safety coordinator, supervisor, foreman, or first aid attendant who will be responsible for fit testing your workers. No prior experience is needed. Participants must attend the full four hours, including the practical assessment, to be signed off.
Yes. On completion, your participant has been assessed as competent to perform qualitative respirator fit testing on your workers as part of your own respiratory protection program. It does not qualify them to train other people to fit test, and it does not cover quantitative fit testing.
Qualitative, using Bitrex or saccharin protocols. That covers N95, half-face and full-face respirators where an assigned protection factor of 10 is sufficient for your hazard assessment. Where a higher protection factor is relied on, CSA Z94.4 calls for quantitative testing, which this course does not cover.
CSA Z94.4 requires fit tests to be carried out by a trained, competent person, but it does not set an expiry date on that training. Industry practice is to refresh every three years and we recommend the same. Refresh sooner if your tester moves to different respirator types or your program changes.
For routine testing, no, and that is the point. Most employers who train in-house keep us for the work an internal tester cannot absorb: a large intake, a shutdown, a second site, or cover while the tester is away. If you would rather not run a program at all, our on-site respirator fit testing service tests groups of five or more people at your site.
