Common questions about spirometry for BC construction crews.
No. There is no section of the BC OHS Regulation requiring spirometry for respirable crystalline silica or any other exposure - this differs from US requirements, which causes regular confusion. Where you have an exposure control plan for silica, OHSR 5.54(2)(f) lists health monitoring as an element when required.
Three reasons. Silicosis is permanent and progressive, so early detection is the only intervention available. A baseline protects you if a worker's decline is later attributed to your site. And it costs very little to add to a visit we are already making for hearing testing.
Yes, that is most of our work. We need somewhere to set up reasonably close to where the crew is working. We test 40-70 people per day and can add technicians for larger or multi-trade sites.
Yes. If we are on your site for hearing testing, spirometry is billed separately but shares the visit, so you pay for one mobilization rather than two.
No interval is set in BC regulation. The usual pattern is a baseline when a worker starts in a dusty trade, then annually while exposure continues. We will recommend a schedule based on your actual work rather than a generic number.
