Hearing Conservation

Noise hazard area

Protect your hearing

Noise damage is permanent and painless. It adds up a little every shift.

1
Wear hearing protection the whole time you're in a noise area.Taking it out for even a few minutes cuts your protection for the whole shift.
2
Fit it right.Foam plugs: roll, pull your ear back, insert, hold 20 seconds. Muffs: nothing breaking the seal.
3
Shouting to be heard at arm's length? It's too loud. That usually means noise above 85 dBA, the WorkSafeBC limit for an 8-hour shift.
4
Get your hearing tested.Within 6 months of starting work in noise, then every 12 months. It takes about 10 minutes and happens at work.
5
Speak up.Tell your supervisor about ringing ears, muffled hearing, or damaged protection.

At this workplace

Based on the WorkSafeBC OHS Regulation, Part 7 (noise exposure limit 85 dBA; hearing protection to CSA Z94.2; hearing tests within 6 months of hire and every 12 months).

Respirator Fit Testing

Respirator users

No seal, no protection

A respirator only works if it fits your face. A fit test proves it does.

1
Get fit tested before you first wear a tight-fitting respirator. That includes N95s and half or full facepieces. Then retest at least once every 12 months.
2
Only wear the make, model and size you passed on.A different mask, even a different size, needs a new fit test.
3
Be clean-shaven where the mask seals.Beards and stubble let contaminated air leak past the seal.
4
Do a seal check every time you put it on.Cover the filters and breathe in: the mask should pull in slightly and hold. Readjust if you feel a leak.
5
Tell your supervisor if your face changes.Big weight changes, dental work, surgery or scarring can change the fit. Ask for a retest.

At this workplace

Based on the WorkSafeBC OHS Regulation, Part 8 and CSA Z94.4 (fit testing before first use, at least annually, and when the respirator or the worker's face changes).
