Common questions from construction companies about on-site respirator fit testing.
Under WorkSafeBC's Occupational Health and Safety Regulation, a worker must pass a fit test before being issued a tight-fitting respirator, using CSA Standard Z94.4 procedures. Section 8.40 of that Regulation then requires retesting at least once a year. Workers should also be retested when they change respirator model or size, or have facial changes such as significant weight change or dental work.
We provide qualitative fit testing for N95 disposable respirators and suitable half-face reusable respirators, from 5 people per visit. For larger groups we also provide quantitative fit testing, which measures a numeric fit factor and covers full-face respirators and tight-fitting PAPR facepieces. If only a handful of your workers use full-face respirators, smaller groups can be accommodated for an additional fee — tell us your numbers and we will quote it.
Nothing can come between the respirator and the skin where it seals, so workers must be clean-shaven along the seal line, with no hair, jewellery or eyeglass arms under the edge. They should bring the exact respirator make, model, and size they use, plus any gear they wear with it, such as safety glasses or a hard hat.
