Common questions from healthcare and long-term care employers about on-site respirator fit testing.
Under WorkSafeBC's Occupational Health and Safety Regulation, a worker must pass a fit test before being issued a tight-fitting respirator, using CSA Standard Z94.4 procedures. CSA Z94.4 calls for retesting at least every two years, and many employers retest annually. Workers should also be retested when they change respirator model or size, or have facial changes such as significant weight change or dental work.
We provide qualitative fit testing for N95 disposable respirators and for half-face and full-face reusable respirators.
Workers must be clean-shaven where the respirator seals to the face. They should bring the exact respirator make, model, and size they use, plus any gear they wear with it, such as safety glasses or a hard hat.
