Why Fit Testing Matters

A Respirator Only Protects When It Seals

Even a small gap between the mask and face can let contaminants in. Common respiratory hazards for forestry and wood products companies include:

  • Wood dust from sawing, sanding, and planing
  • Wildfire smoke during fire season
  • Wood treatments, stains, and coatings
  • Dust from chipping and debarking

Crews are often spread across remote sites and rotating shifts, and fire season can bring a sudden need for respirators. We make it simple by bringing fit testing to you.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions from forestry and wood products companies about on-site respirator fit testing.

When is respirator fit testing required in BC?
arrow_forward_ios

Under WorkSafeBC's Occupational Health and Safety Regulation, a worker must pass a fit test before being issued a tight-fitting respirator, using CSA Standard Z94.4 procedures. CSA Z94.4 calls for retesting at least every two years, and many employers retest annually. Workers should also be retested when they change respirator model or size, or have facial changes such as significant weight change or dental work.

What respirators can you test?
arrow_forward_ios

We provide qualitative fit testing for N95 disposable respirators and for half-face and full-face reusable respirators.

How should workers prepare?
arrow_forward_ios

Workers must be clean-shaven where the respirator seals to the face. They should bring the exact respirator make, model, and size they use, plus any gear they wear with it, such as safety glasses or a hard hat.

Do workers need fit testing for wildfire smoke?
arrow_forward_ios

If workers are required to wear tight-fitting respirators such as N95s for wildfire smoke, they need to pass a fit test first. We can test crews before fire season.

Can you test crews on rotating shifts?
arrow_forward_ios

Yes. Share your rotation schedule and we will plan visits so each crew can be tested during their time on site.
