Here are answers to common questions about fit tester training for mills and wood products employers.
Usually a safety coordinator, a shift supervisor, or the designated first aid attendant. No prior fit testing experience is needed. Pick someone on site regularly, because the benefit comes from testing being available whenever a worker needs it.
Yes. On completion, your participant has been assessed as competent to perform qualitative respirator fit testing on your workers as part of your own respiratory protection program. It does not qualify them to train other people to fit test, and it does not cover quantitative fit testing.
Qualitative, using Bitrex or saccharin protocols. That covers N95 and suitable half-face respirators. This course does not cover full-face respirators or quantitative fit testing.
CSA Z94.4 requires fit tests to be carried out by a trained, competent person, but it does not set an expiry date on that training. Industry practice is to refresh every three years and we recommend the same. Refresh sooner if your tester moves to different respirator types or your program changes.
For routine testing, no. Most employers who train in-house keep us for the work an internal tester cannot absorb: a large intake, a shutdown, a second site, or cover while the tester is away.
