About the Client
Waste Connections provides waste collection and recycling services to residential and commercial customers across British Columbia. Collection work is dispersed by nature - crews are out on routes rather than sitting in one building - which makes workplace training genuinely difficult to schedule.
Keeping certified first aid attendants in place is part of meeting WorkSafeBC obligations and, more practically, part of making sure someone qualified is on hand when a crew member is hurt.

How do we know which level of first aid attendant we need?
Three things decide it: the maximum number of workers on your largest shift, the hazard rating WorkSafeBC has assigned to your classification unit, and your workplace class, which comes from how far you are from the nearest BC Emergency Health Services ambulance station and whether an ambulance can reach the work area.
Your hazard rating is assigned by WorkSafeBC and appears on your annual assessment letter - it is not something you set yourself. Those three inputs are cross-referenced against the tables in Schedule 3-A of the OHS Regulation. We are happy to walk through it with you.
Can training be scheduled around route and shift times?
Yes, and for collection operations that is usually the whole point. We schedule around early starts and route times so the training fits the operation rather than the other way round.
